Dead Casuarina Trees

These Casuanaria trees were killed by the Corps of Engineers because they are an invasive species (Australian?) They more or less take over the area they are in, drink a lot of water and cause a fire hazard. Rather than poisoning them, they are girdled or damaged. The tree doesn't recover well from damage. They used to provide a lot of protection from wind on the canal, but now it is all desolation... The birds, however, seem to enjoy perching on the dead trunks!
