These Casuanaria trees were killed by the Corps of Engineers because they are an invasive species (Australian?) They more or less take over the area they are in, drink a lot of water and cause a fire hazard. Rather than poisoning them, they are girdled or damaged. The tree doesn't recover well from damage. They used to provide a lot of protection from wind on the canal, but now it is all desolation... The birds, however, seem to enjoy perching on the dead trunks! |
